Jan Diesselhorst * 18.03.1954 – † 05.02.2009
came from a musical family in Marburg. He was so gifted a cellist that he was accepted as a guest student at the music college in Frankfurt am Main to study with Alexander Molzahn, whilst he was actually still at school. He then later carried on his degree studies with Wolfgang Boettcher in Berlin. He received many prizes and scholarships during his studies, and then won the audition to join the cello section of the Berlin Philharmonic in 1977. During his time in the orchestra he also played sometimes in a solo capacity, and also found his 'home' in 1985 as a founding member of the Philharmonia Quartett. Since 1990 he was also a chamber music coach and mentor for the Orchestral-Akademie of the Berlin Philharmonic, and in the summer of 2005 he was also elected by his orchestral colleagues to the board of the orchestra. He fulfilled these duties with the utmost motivation and engagement until his sudden death in February of 2009.
